PSAT comes in three different flavors: PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10 and PSAT 11 or the PSAT/NMSQT. As indicated by the names, each test is to be taken in a particular grade(s), although one can take PSAT 11 while in 10th grade as well. However, US citizens qualify for college scholarship if they take the NMSQT in 11th grade only, and score in a certain percentile that varies by state. Naturally, as you go up from 8/9 to 10 to 11, the difficulty level increases while maintaining the format and style of the questions. PSAT is not used in the college admissions process, unlike the SAT and the ACT.
Then, why take PSAT at all? Whether you're a US citizen or not, PSAT is a great way to practice for SAT or the ACT, too. It's a freebie, a noball, a free penalty kick! There is absolutely no downside to attempting any level of the PSAT; in fact, they give you practice and acclamate you to a timed, aptitude test. While practice at Uwezo does make perfect, nothing can equal the real test in a real environment with real instructors.
Realizing that Reading Comprehension and Grammar are the two areas that particularly challenge students, we have developed our own tests which give an accurate picture of a student's strengths and weaknesses. In addition to in-class practice by topic and concept - for Math and English & Writing - we insist that students write a minimum of 5-10 mock exams. By tracking students' performance in each mock, we help them improve with each attempt. This is done through self-analysis and remedial classes as needed.
Utarget™ is a process that helps a student achieve his or her target score which was set right after the diagnostic test. After the student has attempted three mock exams, an analysis will reveal topics and areas where the student needs improvement. We can pinpoint exactly what the remedy is since we have categorized and typed each question on the mocks. After this analysis, any necessary remedial action is taken, and then the student moves on to the next mock exam. This process of Test-Review-Remedy is continued for the remainder of the mock tests, until the student is satisfied. Utarget™ is a focused, guaranteed way to achieve results.
Taking the PSAT in any grade does not preclude you from choosing the ACT in the future. Uwezo can help guide you toward which exam is the better fit for you, ACT or SAT. Either one is only one of the components needed for college admissions. The US universities follow a holistic evaluation process that goes beyond academics and aptitude tests.
